the farewell

the farewell

A Poem by Hester Grey

Our love is forbidden
no one will understand
we have met in the moonlight
joined hand in hand
in the garden of our youth
i have found you at last
but you belong to another
oh let these emotions pass
for how can i forsake my honor
and run away with you
how can i betray her trust
and hide amongst the shadows?

our souls have met
and found one another
our eyes have long glances held
surely we were made to be
but why then the difficulty
must we say goodbye

we've talked through everything
the problems of the world we've unlocked
together we've found the answers
then why do we have to part

on the swing set like children
did we play and in the early morning
we swam in the lake
long walks in the country we took
and in the attic read the old books
but this must end forever
we must to our duties be true
goodbye oh lover of my soul
goodbye forever
 adieu
