The colour of love

The colour of love

A Poem by Gee
"

Domestic abuse

"
Look at you you poor ol' thing
does it hurt, do they sting,
is it love that paints your skin
that draws those colours from within.

Will you when he begs and pleads,
forgiveness sought on bended knees,
tell him that you understand
'twas fermented malt that raised his hand.

And of course you know he'll never again,
(until of course he does it again)
so the roses wrapped in week old news
will ease the pain of every bruise.

These fading 'til none there to see
unblemished skin, scarred memory,
fears shared with self, reflected back,
of when not if, his next attack

I think they are as bad as each other, neither should be endured. Thank you Stella
Wow. Truly a beautiful poem. I love the antithesis of the tittle seeming like something sweet and romantic until you read the poem and realise its the opposite. You've managed to pack so much meaning into so few words and that is something I admire in poetry. Good job! :)

Tô write about Domestic abuse is extremely difficult, Gee...all those images of victims i have seen flood my mind, making me highly emotional. You drew a calm and clear picture of the victim, and that makes it easier to understand the mechanics of the abuse. Whether it's human or animal, incidents of physical ( emotional) abuse is hard to tolerate, it breaks our soul to pieces.

If we could see and read the domestic abuse reports at police stations that happen every night somewhere we'd be shocked. It happens all the time. TV shows dramatize killings as their main subject. This brought to mind the OJ Simpson case.

So sad that black and blue become the colors of ‘love’ for so many. Every minute, one more victim. If children are involved it’s even more horrific. In the words of my own mom- ‘If I leave him, where am I going to go?’ She never learned to drive, had no job skills, little education, no money of her own and two young kids. Her family would have looked down on her if she left. She was trapped. That was in the 50s. Thank God women have more options now, so much more support. Thank you for your important words in bringing the situation home.

Thank you Annette.
Abusers use the word "love" to continue the cycle. When you think about true love, it's a kind of blasphemy when an abuser uses the word "love."

Thanks for popping in and commenting Tony
it's a difficult cycle to break once one falls in that pattern of abuse

I'm hoping you're not talking from experience.
Hi Ana, hope you are well.
Thank you
This well rhymed, sardonically told tale is a spot on view of a victim of chronic abuse. It's all there, the cyclic abuse, the excuses, the temporary apologies, etc. Many condemn these victims for not leaving, but it's often not as simple as that. A well wrought piece that should be read by every human services worker.
