An Intimate Affair

An Intimate Affair

A Poem by Gee
"

A small, intimate, but 2 metres apart, affair

"
There is only the "top table"
a table eight metres long
and a few centimetres over two metres wide,
laid out this way to maintain social distancing
between the closest of people.
Celebrations are muted,
toasts and speeches echo off walls
of a room designed to hold two hundred,
not ten...
Waiters with gloved hands and masked faces
deliver the celebratory meals,
faces this way adorned once banned in France
but now the norm worldwide,
leaving, I would imagine,
many a Parisian muslim smiling.

The evening DJ has been fuloughed, not needed, redundant,
which matters not to him as the non refundables
will pay him handsomely to sit idle,
this the case for many a month going forward,
perhaps longer...

Airline tickets sit atop their bedside dresser,
two empty cases gather dust beneath the bed
and the bathroom cabinet sags under the weight of
all manner of pills, powders, lotions and potions,
these bought, as by all, when venturing to exotic locations.
Hopefully the "best befores" stretch a summer or two into the future.

The honeymoon is now much closer to home,
in fact it is at home,
8 Pilkington Gardens,
Little Comfort,
in the county of Muchly Cheesed Off
But on the plus side, at least them and theirs are safe
although this does little to lift the mood.

life as we live it but often not as we wish.. I like this very much.. I watched a movie once that talked about creating intimacy in a crowd.. now we find that we must create it from a distance as well..

What a great capture sir and simply brimming with up to date insights, realities and likely probabilities .. oh and more than a fair share of wit n humour.. or could that be satire .. yes, I think it should.. Nice one Gee..

welcome you are sir and truly :)
Being forgetful & being in the wilderness for ten years, I have lost touch with how other people live. I have not been paying attention, holed up writing this book. So your poem is chock-full of vivid details & it throws me right into the scene like I haven't been thinking or feeling it at all lately. Allow me to mention that using so many dimensional references early in your poem felt like a mind-twister & I prefer to use comparisons (long as a leg, wide as a watermelon, tall as a toilet). So clever & cheeky: "Parisian muslim smiling" . . . and this is one of many details that show how your observations are unique & fresh (not the same stale s**t people have been rehashing since I checked out): "DJ has been fuloughed" -- this line caused me to think of all the kinds of workers worked out of a job . . . maybe some jobs never to come back . . . for that matter, maybe facemasks will become the norm. How sad for our world. I just wrote 2 books all about communing thru touch & it's hard to return to the real world! Love reading you again. So honored you reached out (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Hi Gee. This is a really well written and thoughtful take on the current situation; and though I wish it were not going to be so, prescient, is the word that sprang instantly to mind as I read; and 'muchly cheesed off,' as we all are, this horrible little gatecrasher of a bug isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Einstein Noodle is right though. The way humankind has painted itself into a never ending consumer oriented corner, means that ready or not, the world in lockdown, will simply not be allowed to carry on for much longer.

On a lighter note, did you listen to Boris spluttering away a few days ago, as he did his best to defend Dominic Cummings' hilarious claim that he took the trip to Barnard Castle in order to test his eyesight? The PM told the Downing Street press conference, that he was finding he had to wear glasses for the first time in years, and that he was inclined to think it was very plausible that eyesight can be a problem associated with coronavirus. You really couldn't make it up, could you; well, unless of course, you are a politician. :))

Shoulda gone to Specsavers. :))

Beccy.

PS. Trust you and yours are safe and well.

Now that's a sobering affair...all that distancing between the bride, groom and guests.
Though perhaps distancing from the mother-in-law isn't so bad. Damn pain in the a*s this virus. If they make me distance from the current portrait I am working on, i'll go ballistic.
You hit the nail on the head.
Fine write.

All good so far, Gee. :) Thank you and you are welcome!
great title .. we have to get back to our lives in my opinion .. we can be common sensical about it .. for instance take a family of 4, 5 or 6 .. that lives together .. are asymptomatic .. no reason they can not all sit at the same table eh!? ... and open or not .. if we are not comfortable .. we don't have to venture out until we are .. but this crippling economy is getting fast to the point of crushing far more lives than Covid .. but that's just me own opinion... you prose/poetry really hits home with the feelings of frustration and depression ... i hear you loud and clear
