Memorial

Memorial

A Poem by Gee
"

Just simple words written in the quiet, small hours of morning

"
There is no highly polished brass plaque
or words etched into cold, coloured granite,
as this she said would place a burden upon us,
make us feel duty bound to stay, visit,
if for no other reason than to polish, tidy, place fresh flowers,
and this in her mind both a waste of time and money.
Would be better, she said, her memorial be our beating hearts and memories,
as these would not be a bind, would not tie us to one place,
would have her life, love, memory, "portable," ever present
waiting patiently in the shadows of our sub conscious
to be visited, called forward into the light,
even if the light, as is mainly the case, be the darkness,
the quiet small hours of early mornings
when as all sleep the minds of those silently mourning and missing remember...

Beautifully captured Gee and can only see perfect sense from what she thought of plaques and headstones. Have never Ben there in life, so impossible to remember them there in anything other than a shell of who they were. Best to kep her alive in thought. Memories of places and things she done, enjoyed are the best epitaph could hope for.
I remember my Dad best when in the supermarket and I spot green lids on milk. Reminds me of him trying corn flakes in hospital for the first time in his 60's, commenting that they were nice, but he didn't like that semi skilled milk they gave you. Him and Mum done that all the time, saying side saddles instead of side salads and being overcome with emulsion rather than emotion. It was their personal joke and they didn't care if others thought them daft. Glad I got that from them too. 😉
We can put off visiting a grave, but never put of remembering those wonderful memories shared with them, every time they cross our mind.
Keep safe sir and keep remembering.
