Writers cafe in a nutshell.

Writers cafe in a nutshell.

A Story by Relic

Never accept a friend request from someone who has never reviewed you. They could sit collecting dust on your friend's list shelf.

Due to false rumors I've been blocked by people who thought I did something wrong. Someone even told them I was another writer who had a bad reputation writing under another account. Be careful who you have conversations with and always avoid young writers who seem immature or impressionable.

Do not rely on this site to teach you anything about writing. There are a couple of writers that have helped me here but I won't mention their names. I asked for their advice and they helped. Most won't ask.

This site has changed and many do not reply. With no reply or review, I figure they don't care about me so I avoid them. Even if it's a pretty girl. :)  I'll let you decide what to do about that if you're in the same situation.

This place--like all free writing sites I suppose--can be a soap opera, believe me, I know first-hand.

The reviews you get will more than likely be good. (If that's what you're looking for). If you critique anyone, watch out! They may be too insulted to get back to you. They only want to hear the good stuff.  I know of one popular writer here who deleted my critique right away. (Again, don't ask me who).

If you send a message to a new writer welcoming them to the site, most times they will ignore you. I guess they think you're trying to get a review out of them or something.

There are some good people here. If you find them don't forget them.

Many good poets have left and gotten better.

There are good poets here and there are bad poets here.

Don't hook up with/talk sex with anyone. It's dumb and useless. Get a girlfriend/boyfriend instead. You're better off.

You don't know anyone here even if you know them.

Revise, revise and revise.

People may interpret something you wrote differently than what you were thinking. Let them.

Learn to spell if you suck at it. If you don't know a word, google search it. It will say do you mean....

Join other free writing sites. You'll find a poem that bombs here may be reviewed somewhere else with better results.

If you're talking to someone and they have a pattern of replying 10 or fifteen minutes later--unless you don't care--forget them, they're wasting your time. Respond to them when you want if at all. Do some reviews instead. That's probably what they're doing anyway.

It can get boring here. Go read something good.

Reading poetry is not like reading a newspaper. Writing poetry is not like writing a letter in a poetic format.

If you read a poem that gets you upset for any reason, just move on.

Thank those that have reviewed you and plan on reviewing them when you have the time. If you don't understand what they wrote, ask them to explain it.

Don't ever get upset if you don't make the popular page. It's not all its cracked up to be. Besides, The people on there have a lot of return reviews to do and it can get overwhelming.

If you get reviews from writer x and those reviews are very simple with much praise, pay attention to other reviews writer x has done. If he/she gets a lot of reviews on his or her poems that are simple too, he's discovered how to lure people in by merely doing lots of reviews filled with praise.

If writer x has a pattern of copying stanzas of the poem he/she is reviewing, there's a reason. It's called points.

The friend's list is okay, but you'll probably forget about them when the list starts to expand. Go through it once in a while and delete those you know have left.

There are angry people here.

There are happy people here.

If you read a lot of books, a poet's typos will stand out like a clunk on the head. Some people don't care, they just want to understand what the writer is saying. There's nothing wrong with that.

Not everyone here is devious.

Not everyone here is honest.

Write for yourself and have no expectations here.

Write for the love of writing.

Some people can get away with anything here.

If you don't agree with something I've said, fine, I was expecting you farthead. (just kidding) As for everyone else, it may finally give some of you an opportunity to give your first wonderfully creative and outstanding critique to me that everyone will see and analyze. That is if you don't mind everyone remembering you for the rest of their lives for what you said on Writers Cafe to someone who was just trying to help and inform the masses that looked at what he innocently wrote. Whew!  :)

How can I top, the lovely and talented Ms KL Goode, and her magnificent review? Sadly, recently, I learned, a very talented poet has left here, over the bs, for the past year, or so. Relic, wish more people have a cleaner understand of their responsibility, as members of WC. Sigh...maybe, I am dreaming, my own little pipedream with Technicolor glasses, which are polarized, too.

Ok lots of insights here. Frieda has never returned to the cess pit. She is too good for that and her abuser KT Little aka many faces has survived! F**k Charlie he is a c**t who does not give a f**k!

I must agree, John. Thank you.
I'm not sure if this is a rant (good 0ne) an instruction sheet on how to use the Café...a warning to use at your own peril or just reaching out.
Most of those I've dealt with here seem honest and genuine...at least that's my experience so far...but I understand there are the unpleasant types who want to bask...and the young ones who want praise but shy away from assistance...but how do you learn otherwise?
At any rate this was well written with excellent thoughts.
I don't always find time to review but I try to get at as many as I can.

I like this. Thanks Tim

This is an old post of yours Tim, yet everything you say is totally applicable to the now. I have been at writerscafe for a year, long enough to experience both the good and bad. People are here for different reasons. I am quite happy to receive a short review telling me that my lines are appreciated or otherwise. That is fine. The longer reviews giving detailed critique are welcome too. Critiquing is an art in itself and not everyone is able to do it well. Each to their own. I found out early on that if you don't review you won't get reviewed yourself. It should be a two way thing. Because I enjoy reading poetry I tend to leave quite a few responses. I don't tend to pick a poem apart, but leave a response as to how the lines made me feel when I read them, whether I could relate to them, whether the lines gave me imagery. There are some excellent writers here and there are many who have only just started. Offering encouragement helps, we don't want to frighten people away. I have found there is plenty of drama here, no different from other sites. Best to avoid the drama unless you want to become part of it yourself. Overall I am happy here, have made many friends. I have been blocked by people without knowing why. Am I bothered? Plenty more poets in the sea. I think that's enough from me. Can't argue with anything you've said.

You are welcome Tim :)
Calming and lovely, and some genuine clues for learning the ropes here. Very nice of you to take the time and trouble to share your experience, thank you. I have found a couple of writers here who challenge me and give me what I was so interested in finding here: intelligent and provocative correspondence. I've been blocked for no reason. I've found wonderful new authors to read. I've found garbage. I too don't think this is a place to learn how to write, but rather a community, and a vibrant one.

Myself and others have been blocked too. Thanks for your thoughts.
Okay, I'll take this all in.

I love your slightly caustic way of conveying truths without sounding a bit offensive. You're actually revealing more about YOURSELF here, than the website (& that's OK, too!) I wonder why you spend so much time spinning yarns about this website, even tho you do it better than anyone. Here's my advice: We are each here for different reasons . . . find your community that jives with your vibes & don't worry about those who don't! *smile* Excellent writing, by the way! Fondly, Margie

Thank you very much, Margie. :)
This is pretty fantastic. I mean I didn't come here for reviews or anything like that but it was good to read what goes on from someone who has been here.

okay thank you
I agree with everything you said and all I can say is "Amen my brother, you got everything just right."" (regarding writers not accepting criticism well: I just posted a review of a poem by one of the stellar poets on this site In which I pointed out an egregious mistake in grammar. I can't wait to see if it's ignored, deleted, or appreciated! Whatever happens It will tell me volumes about this writer.
