The Girl and the Book

The Girl and the Book

A Poem by Kimberly Miller

The Girl and the Book

She drifts through life moment by moment

Dulled by the lack of thrill

She looks for some kind of enlightenment

That won't keep her heart so still.

Then there, in the corner, on the dusty shelf,

Sits the leather-bound written work,

That has it's own longings, kept to itself,

Yet somehow it calls her to lurk.

She reaches out her hand, and grasps the thick volume,

Pushing away the years of dust and dross, solitary and desolation,

It whispers to her, like a smoking fume,

Slowly, softly, she turns the page in caution.

Page by page, it speaks to her,

Filling her being with meaning and joy,

Like a kitten's soft purr,

Or a child's new toy.

She reads and reads,

Her heart begins to soar,

Her mind takes lead,

And soon desires more.

Word by word, line by line,

She finds new hope behind each page,

And when she closes the book, and touches the bind,

She knows, she has opened up her cage.

There are no words to describe this feeling,

Only the readers can understand,

Its like the world around you, has all new meaning,

And its all waiting, on that bookstand.

Thank you! They do! ~Books let us travel to far away places when we have to stay where we are~
Being an avid reader, I know how being carried away into the realm of the novel gets to the reader. Books are sometimes a perfect escape plan. Valentine

Great poem! Your words conveyed meaning very effectively and I felt like I could relate to the poem itself!
