Nibbins is black

Nibbins is black

A Poem by Philip Franklin
"

The Midnight Folk

"
Nibbins is black, sleek and nimble
An honourable cat with mind that is far from simple
The other two cats Greymalkin and Blackmalkin
Are somewhat evil
In fact they find it hard to even be civil

Nibbins rides the midnight skies
With his friend, the white witch
Who helps those who are, troubled
But Greymalkin and Blackmalkin
Can only grumble
And plot to have Nibbins take a tumble

The Malkins are lazy and jealous of Nibbins
They will not ride the midnight skies
They keep dark secrets
And always spy
For the black witch
Who wishes to rule the midnight folk with lies?

But Nibbins is black sleek and nimble
He protects the boy
Whose love is so, simple
Nibbins will find the hidden treasure
And help the boy in full, full measure

The Malkins grey and black
Can hiss and claw
But is a fact
That Nibbins is black sleek and nimble
And the white witch knows that he is not simple

My thanks to John Masefield, then poet laureate and the author of The Midnight Folk a wonderful book do read it.
