closer to the end

closer to the end

A Poem by Mark
"

A life worth living doesn't fear death.

"

In the night I can sit in the breeze gazing at the stars

and their quiet hope.

I know they blaze but from here they just sparkle

Distance will do that.

To look at them and their ancient light

without thinking of their reality

I can still wish, I can still dream, I can still be determined.

The darkness doesn't speak

just the crickets expelling heat

or wanting company.

The night is not so lonesome anymore

It is the place I go soon.

I would stay here with the darkness

if my eyelids would let me

But time has taken my vitality

a sip here and there.

Time to rest, time.

I lie down wondering if this will be the last.

I'm at an age where death is no longer scary

just inevitable.

I think the reality of death becomes less of a fear as one ages - it almost becomes peaceful to some degree. Beautifully written Mark - stay well :)

Thank you so much Ruth! Every time I wake up, it's a gift. :)
I think if we are somewhat content with how we lived...we can feel acceptance when it is time to die.
I am at an age to really appreciate this piece.

Thanks for reading Jacob. :)
Somewhere along the line, most of us learned to fear death. But Marcus Aurelius said it is just a natural process, and therefore not to be feared. In other words, it's just a matter of changing old thought patterns.
