The Graveyard Shift

The Graveyard Shift

A Poem by The Iron Horseman
"

A romp in the graveyard at night.

"

Stumbling through the graveyard at night,

A bottle in my hand,

I tumble over a headstone

And hit my head hard when I land.

Staggering to my feet, I see a woman,

Champagne glass in her hand,

“Do you need some help?” she asked,

“It seems you can hardly stand.”

“No, I'm fine, really” I said,

“I'm just a little dazed.”

“That's alright then,” the lady replied,

“I'm just a little crazed!”

“Come,” she said, with a seductive smile,

“Let's have ourselves a party.”

“Now you're talking,” I answered back,

“I can party hearty.”

“I like to dance,” she hinted

With a stunning smile.

“Me too,” I said, “I'll hum some music

And we can dance a while.”

She moved in close and so did I,

As into my arms I drew her,

But it didn't quite work that way,

My arms just passed right through her!

Jumping back in fright I tripped again,

Falling back onto the ground.

“My God, you're a ghost!” I gasped.

“Yes,” she replied, “There's a lot of it going around.”

“I must have drunk more than I thought,

This just cannot be real,” I said.

“Oh yes, it can,” the woman replied,

“This is what happens to you when you're dead.”

I was oddly in love with this poem. I thought that it was one of the best poems I have ever read.
I liked the story behind your poem and I thought that the flow was spot on!
Keep up the great work!

That twist! This poem has a good structure despite the whimsicality. This was very fun to read, and that twist is genuinely intriguing.

Thank you again, my friend. I am glad you liked this - it is one of my favourites!
A very nice ending to the poem. The good flow of thoughts led to logical ending. I liked the woman. Wanted dance and some company. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

Yeah...You're welcome.
Some of the rhyming seems a bit off but the story seems to compensate for some of these short-comings. Honestly the biggest thing to me, and this is more of a personal thing is that I would have liked it if you added... hmmm more complex words to the poem. And I mean it could be as simple as looking up synonyms for words you used and shifting some of the words, but what I'm getting at here is that I would like it if some of the words could be more "nuanced" in meaning. Some examples being; dead, dance, ghost, drunk. But other than that good poem.

LMAO - okay, okay, okay. I don't know if this "really" qualifies as my spooky poem - but it was so much fun that I nearly cackled my fool witch head off. I absolutely adored it. The cadence and tempo, the rhyme, it was all stylish and absurd and so much fun to read! Well done, my friend.

Two thumbs and large toes up!
