Homecoming

Homecoming

A Poem by J Carly
"

I grew up in a small town just across the Escambia Bay. I've been away for merely six years, and in that time, it seems as if everything and somehow, nothing at all has changed.

"

On a pilgrimage

To the place that made me

Memories call out

Overflowing from a well gone dry

The landmarks from my childhood

Some gone and some sporting fresh paint

Faces of my past have changed with time

Yet, somehow the facade remains

Untouched; unblemished by

So many years gone by

A small town

Built on big dreams

A breeding ground for broken hearts

The wounds of lost innocence

Fester in the sweltering heat

Yet home is the remedy

That cures all ills

And broken hearts

Mend with laughter from a front porch swing

You’ll find no tears

At the bottom of a glass of sweet tea

Short tempers get lost

In the tall, tall weeds

Along silent black waters

As crickets sing into the night
