Grandma's Belly-round

Grandma's Belly-round

A Poem by JE Falcon
"

A poem about country fun and friendly get togethers.

"

Grandma has a washtub

And she calls it, “Belly-round”,

It’s extra thick, galvanized,

And the finest tub in town.

Sometimes it’s a stool

When she plucks a hen or two

And it can be a barber’s chair

If she gets a hold of you.

It’s great for gathering apples,

Or peaches, in their time.

It even makes a real fine ship

When pirates sail the foamy brine.

Yes, Grandma has a washtub,

A Hohner and a mason’s jar,

And on Friday nights the kinfolk come,

Some by carriage and some by car.

That’s when Grandma plays old Belly-round

And Grandpa plays the fiddle,

Sis and I, we play Jew's-harp,

And Guitar, fair the middle.

Yes, everybody come to dance

To the sounds of Belly-round,

They hoop, holler, and have a ball

When Grandma lays it down.

This poem came about because of a request from a mid-western editor of a twice-yearly poetry journal. She asked for poetry submissions that farmers and country living people could relate to. This poem was one of the ones that I submitted and was published in the next addition.
