Sonnet 1

Sonnet 1

A Poem by Jeremy Baker

Welcome to Terra Pro Zac, land of my ancestors and countrymen!

A big land, for big men (not to mention, big pharmaceuticals!)

We have pills galore, for every ailment, from the common to the rare

and we even cater for those that don’t exist; not yet, anyway.

We specialise in the alleviation of every ill, every worry, every blemish

and the preservation of our profits, so necessary for our R & D, of course.

From a gelatinous mix of colours, preservatives and re-uptake inhibitors, we

foment a revolution in near-medicine, with noxious power in a pill.

With all the verve of a street hawker, our little blue pills will give you a lift

and brighten your day. Or calm you down. Or help you think.

Or eliminate pimples. Or banish cellulite. Or ward off evil spirits.

Thank God for our marketing - you need not go on living in ignorance.

Read our brochure. Watch our commercials. Take time to think it over -

just one pill a day and you could be the next great Casanova.

Loved these lines. I was snickering and laughing out loud that this whole poem. With all the verve of a street hawker, our little blue pills will give you a lift
and brighten your day.

We depend way too much on pharmaceutical drugs in order to get through out lives and this can cause great issues else where. The other line that had me rolling with laughter is this one.

Take time to think it over -
just one pill a day and you could be the next great Casanova.

You took this challenge in a more light heart and at time serious feel. You ahve done an excellent job. 100%

reminds me of a lil bit of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World".

I so loath the unethical practices, marketing and dodgy research of big pharmaceuticals.

I love the biting wit and sarcasm... a bit Alan Shore!

The sarcasm and wickedly mocking approach here is perfect! Beautiful work! And I just realised I used the phrase 'reuptake inhibitors' in a recent poem of my own. Damn, you hope you didn't trademark that... Well done!

I do like experimental sonnets - and love the sarcasm - I had a good laugh with this one - the whole take this - do this - the dependency on a world that can't wait to give - and hook - and claw - nice job! love the ending too haha - "Read our brochure. Watch our commercials. Take time to think it over -
just one pill a day and you could be the next great Casanova."

You used satire very skillfully to denounce one of modern society's plagues: the pharmaceutical industry and the addiction it develops.

Nowadays it's like people can't live without taking pills (even when it's not necessary) and no one seems to realize how dangerous it is. It's truly deplorable knowing that all the industry cares about is profit not people's well-being. Most antidepressants have dangerous side-effects like partial memory loss, reducing intellectual abilities, or even addiction.

I really enjoyed this brilliant write combining humour and wit! This kind of writing is the cure for literature's ills ;)

Land of your ancestors and countrymen indeed! I think you nailed society on its narcotized head. Great read!

Excellent sonnet. This reminds me of the song, "Mothers lIttle Helper"

I enjoyed reading this a lot. So true, the words written. This is our society. You penned it brilliantly!!

Loved it!
