Sweet Damsel in Distress

Sweet Damsel in Distress

A Poem by Jerry Ables

Sweet damsel in distress,
How the masses do worship you!
Your bondage speaks to them
Of times when life fills their plates
With its imperfections.

Sweet damsel in distress,
How the masses do venerate you!
Your perils speak to their hatred
Of being subject to any authority
Other than their own petty will.

Sweet damsel in distress,
How the masses do cling to you!
Your rescue speaks to their hope
That they can convert everyone
To seeing them as being perfect.

Sweet damsel in distress,
How the masses do idolize you!
They stay so busy trying to be you
That they have no time to care
About other people's needs.

Sweet damsel in distress,
Tragic is their reliance on you
For their visions of what life should be
What they really need is to learn
That they're being their own prisoners.
