Can I come

Can I come

A Poem by Johanna
"

Inspired by the photo next to the poem and the second world war.. I really hope his daddy did make it back.

"

His father stopped smiling after the mail came that day

The Little boy asked him

What is wrong?

He wouldn´t say

He just smiled and pulled him close

Ruffled his hair

You just go out and play honey

Daddy will be right here

He went back inside when it got colder

To see his mother crying on his daddy´s shoulder

He dropped his jacket and his hat

Never had he seen his mother cry like that

When they saw him his mother picked his things up from the floor

His father asked him to sit on his lap

His father held him to his chest, with the courage he had left

he said son, daddy can´t stay home anymore

The little boy didn´t understand

His mother said his father was fighting for their motherland

But the land was right here, it was right here

And as the cold ceased and the weather got warm

His father put on his uniform

With it´s buttons of gold

Like he´d been told

The boy asked his father what he was gonna do

And his father said I´m going to fight for you

Son, I´m gonna fight for you

His parents kissed and looked each other in the eye

They didn´t want to say goodbye

His mother whispered so he couldn´t hear

Shaking voice in her husbands ear

Love I don´t want you to die

I won´t live if you die

He said I will be alright, I´ll write to you every night

It´s you I´m there to save

We just have to be brave

And on the doorstep in the morning sun

He turned to say goodbye to his son

He walked across the road to join the lines

With his wife and child left behind

Trying to swallow his pain

Or he would leave them in vain

And then he silently prayed to the God he wasn´t sure he believed in

Help me make it through all this

Then he heard footsteps behind him

And a small hand grabbed his

A little boy with a stick as his sword

And only one shoe

daddy can I please come too?

My word, this brought tears to me eyes. Not just saying that either, heart wrenching. So very deep and thoughful are your words this day my friend. You have a knack for painting vivid images with your words. I am in awe of this beautiful, tender and so very sad piece.
