Flicker of Light

Flicker of Light

A Poem by Johannah

One stormy December night,

a certain call was heard.

It was from a moth

slowly dying of cold.

His wailing turned to whisper

clinging to a string of hope.

On his dying breath he heard

a shout so familiar he thought.

"Oh moth where art thou?"

says the candle from afar.

My warmth is here, you'll be relieved"

Life will soon return

With the last ounce of strength ,

the moth flew.

They met halfway

and so they rejoiced

Basking in the warmth of joy,

the moth slept.

Candle is patiently waiting

for moth's slumber to end.

Minutes became hours

moth is still asleep

The candle noticed something odd.

The moth is changing slowly it may seem.

The moth woke up

and the candle cried with glee.

The waiting is over.

Mister moth will be with me

The moth is happy, contended and at peace

until he noticed something new.

There is a flicker of light

radiating from his rear. .

What is this?

He is confused

I must have changed

I am different from before.

Gone are the days

that I begged for light.

I have my own

I should be glad.

I can go anywhere

unafraid of the dark.

For the light is with me

and I am light.

The candle watched

with sadness in her eyes.

The moth doesn't need me

my part has ended.

The moth bid farewell

Candle just smiled.

She is slowly melting

and soon she will die.

The moth is free

with no more fear.

Happiness will never leave

for the light is with him.

At the end of her days,

the candle prayed.

Was it all worth it?

All the heartache and pain?'

Suddenly she heard a call,

a shout from afar.

"Where art thou oh candle?"

Said the voice moving forward.

I am here! I am here!

My strength is now gone.

In this last day,

I'm glad that you're back.

The moth watched the last flicker of light.

A teardrop he shed for the life that was.

The memories came flooding back

No stopping, no turning back.

He looked at the remnants,

the wax and all.

Muttering a prayer,

the moth stood there alone.

Thank you for the warmth

oh candle my love.

Sorry for leaving

when I got my light.

Brill! I resonated with this one deeply and could easily empathise with the little moth. “The moth bid farewell, candle just smiled”. Haunting... please continue writing. This is great stuff
