Worst from men

Worst from men

A Poem by Joe Palmer

Today we see the worst from men.

Yet again, the same cyclic bloody rhetoric

That the news depicts with the same generic scripts.

The changing face of these now-commonplace atrocities

That used to only happen now and then.

As the last gunshot reverberates,

Cue the hate. As a collective we're taught to blame

Anyone with an Arabic sounding name or that looks the same

Because for us, it helps justify the injustice

Despite the racist provocations it instigates.

Desensitised to the senseless bloodshed,

So instead, mass slaughter is condensed to a place and death toll figure

The only key fact to detract is race of the man pulling the trigger.

Any genuine dismay, is soon cast away

By other scaremongering stories that the media’s led.

We reach the crescendo, a worry-fed fever pitch

In which, barbarous actions by a mere few insurgents

Popularise a despicable, right-wing political resurgence.

They both commandeer our worries our fears

And from plans of a peaceful, progressive world we unhitch.

Dark days we live in. Very dramatic take on it all. Well written.
