The note

The note

A Poem by K. Hicks
"

Sadly this happens a lot in our country and in others yet we are blind to it...

"

I'm 3 years old, I like to were my sisters dresses. Mamma tells me boys aren't supposed to were dresses and pulls it off over my head and taps me on the bottom… It makes me sad.

I'm 7 now, I don't like playing sports or getting dirty but I love to play tea party with my older sister and her friends. Dad tells me, boys aren't supposed to play tea parties. They're supposed to get dirty and play sports and action figures. "Go play with your friends outside." He says and pulls me out of the chair.

I'm 13 now and in middle school. I know that I am different from the other boys now. They all like the pretty girls at school, like my friend Kyle likes my sister, but me? I like my best friend Damian. I told my mom and dad that I liked him and they said that is was wrong, "Boys are supposed to be with girls not other boys, it's against the bible and god hates f**s." My dad had said… I don't want god to hate me… I cried myself to sleep that night.

I'm 17 now and I've had two boyfriends, I now get bullied at school. Some of the other kids call me a f*g and a queer saying I'll burn in hell because god hates f**s. I also know my parents hate me for who I am… they never talk to me anymore. Later that night as I get ready I think to myself, if god hates gay people then why did he make me this way? Maybe I'll ask him when I see him tomorrow… I leave a note for my parents on the coffee table explaining what I did and why, then grabbed the razor and headed upstairs to take my last bath…

While you speak much truth in this, and that there are indeed many people who get bullied everyday do to one difference or another. What this piece really makes me feel is this....
No matter how many times a person is bullied, no matter what the issue is, or how bad it hurts. The moment someone chooses to step out of life, it lets the bullies win. Thus the cycle will continue onto other people who are different.
Our society has alot of hate in it. They only way that will stop is when the haters realize they can't hurt anyone anymore. To give in is to tell the bullies that what they do is okay, which it's not.

A very powerful piece of ink you've crafted here, it's a good one. It makes people take another look at those different people around them and ask, how can I help.

Thanks for sharing! =)

First of all I'd like to say I am very glad you are still here to tell your story because too many people who have been in the same situation arent and that is why its important to share your experience so thank you.
The piece is very good, I think its great that you walked us through the different ages of your life, it really reflects just how long you struggled with this and makes it more real for the reader. Unfortunately it seems you grew up with a family who take gender norms very seriously, I hope that eventually they accepted you and are open to your perspective in life.
Its a powerful piece. Thank you for sharing!
