Left Behind

Left Behind

A Poem by Kala Benfield

Walk me home where the fireflies flicker.
Where grass tickles and the blades blister.
Let me fall under your gentle caress.
And the fifth of gin puckers my kiss.
You said I was hard to lay beside.
I watched my stones sink & my tongue lie.
Numerous times I was left behind
When I would run away most nights.
Help me forget why I love you with lies.
Help me remember why I should be left behind.
You saved me from the serpent who contused my life.
You loved me through all the pain and all my strife.
Pinned me down when crimson was trapped beneath my eye.
When ashes would fall from a jack and the light would die.
You found it hard to lay beside me most nights.
But it was within my control to keep everything just right.
And I loved you with a fire the sun would melt to.
You'd blink and everything wasn't enough to prove.
I'd love to spend the night.
But I see you've found someone else to lay beside.
It would burn from the sand in my eyes.
Maybe I'm supposed to be left behind.
