Dreams

I had to write a poem for a competition in which the theme was "Believe, dream, inspire" and this is what I wrote.

My favorite dreams

are the ones

with holes and  trenches

empty like door frames.

Drunken misfits

that sing songs

of satanic solitude,

whisper rants

of human sacrifice, and dine in the glory

of their self made rituals

then, added for personal enjoyment,

nod in the direction

of a table of saints.

The ones that are silent.

A telescope for the heavens

to find mazes of distant stars.

Pictures of

a cross and a textbook scattered across

a hard wooden floor

by a middle class merchant

intrigued by existence.

The ones that sound like schizophrenia

The ones with

cabalistic cadavers

hanging from garage doors,

presenting themselves like crucifixes.

Mouths stretched like

snake jaws.

Baseball caps worn backwards.

Feet hanging

towards hell.

The ones that slice the throats.

My favorite dreams are

silent but vivid.

Secrete, but

broadcasted in a sense

in which everyone has seen.

Like the Mona Lisa

or a stranger’s reflection.

My eyes close to black

but rejuvenate to open wounds

under week old bandages.

Infections that spread from the flesh

to the mind,

like tongues to a schizophrenic.

The ones with mazes of distant stars.

The dreams that roam the

Chicago streets,

kick in the faces

of white collared homeless men,

and slice the throats of

uniformed creationists

and feetless skeptics.

The ones with crucifixes.

They’ll die out soon.

Soon, but not now.

The ones with a young boy

from a foreign place of war

and retaliation.

That throw sticks at

rabid dogs,

crouched on tree branches

in pure naive terror.

My favorite dreams are the ones with

a boy with no home,

a hound gone insane,

and a mind looking for rest.
