Building Behind the Walls

Poem I wrote for English...the class seemed to really like it so I figured I'd share it here. It's kind of a fill-in-the-blank style where you're given the beggining of each line and you write the rest. Hope you like it :)

I am building who I want to be.

I wonder at what I might become

I hear the whispers of possibility pulling me to the future

I see the hands reaching from the past, pulling me back

I want to be able to hold both my future and my past without one erasing the other

I am building who I want to be.

 

I pretend I am invincible

I feel like nothing will ever get through to hurt me

I touch the barriers, feeling safe and yet somehow, alone

I worry that one day these barriers will fall away

I cry on the days that no one seems to see my on the other side of these too-thick walls

I am building who I want to be.

 

I understand that I can make the walls fall down

I say I will let them fall and face the future

I dream of being outside of the barriers

I try to reach into the exterior and see what it would be like to be exposed

I hope one day the past and the future will meet, outside of all these walls

I am building who I want to be.
