Success Could Be Poisonous

Success Could Be Poisonous

A Poem by Kay Salisu Titilola
"

...

"

Comfort makes men weak,

It makes mind forget the future.

Too much of pleasure is a disease,

That corrupts men focus and ambition.

Prosperity spoils the heart,

If we make it rule our world.

Yes, success makes us relax,

Thinking we’ve got to the highest point.

Little pain, little pleasure,

Makes a life to live long.

Success along with failure,

Makes a man to stay strong.

Enjoyment isn’t forbidden.

Merriment is really fun.

But when it's getting too strong,

Then it’s time for deflection.

I think the poet is saying here that though we would like to win all the time, it might not be good for us. Perhaps a setback now and then isn't all bad; it might cause us to reassess ourselves and sharpen our game.

Yeah, I understand.
Just noticing what is happening around.
This is absolutely true. This is a truthful reminder to humanity.

My over-arching belief is that humans cannot be generalized. There are rich privileged people who do good works & hard work. There are poor people who use that as a poor-me excuse to do nothing. You can always find humans to use to illustrate a point. It is my personal makeup that I NEED to work hard at something or I will turn to mush. I totally believe in what you are preaching, my dear, but I also believe this kind of a message can be conveyed by telling a personal story to SHOW instead of preach. I think humans tend to bristle when you tell them how they should live, even if you're right. But when lured into a lesson by the telling of an irresistible story, I just think this is a better way to persuade in one's writing (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Many thanks, Neville.
I really appreciate your review.
I like the title as it has a softer focus in suggesting success 'could' be poisionous. The freeverse, writen with passion and seeming conviction goes on to advocate that success is bad and failure makes one stronger. Personally I believe there are many who experience sucess and stay grounded and there are many who never have success and manage to carve out a 'happy'existence in poverty. There is no 'one size fits all'!

Thanks for your review John.
I really appreciate your idea.
Too much of a good thing isn't good. Makes you off guard and to a certain extent vulnerable when things change suddenly for the worse. Appreciate life when it is good, but never take it for granted. Well penned Kay.

this is a deeply true statement. When things go to good for a very long period, people forget to be diligent.
