The Secular Society

The Secular Society

A Poem by Twilight
"

The meanings in this poem should be clear to readers. If not, you are always perfectly welcome to ask for clarification. It is an indictment of modern society (based on my observations in the UK).

"

In the secular society,

there is no propriety,

little sobriety and no piety,

Only the seeketh of pleasure,

without considered measure,

Instead of righteousness,

greed still prevails,

so many in love with the self,

health, wealth and no regard for true worth,

Appearances seem almost all,

genuine feelings mocked or scorned,

surely human society deserves more?

Seems rather harsh to me. If a secular person read this, it wouldn't persuade them at all to become a Christian. It seems very judgemental and arrogant, instead of being nurturing and warm hearted. It justs seems like it should be more inviting and humble to encourage people to join in the benefits of being a Christian.

In truth, I've found secular people as diverse as religious people in terms of ethics, propriety and sobriety. A life outside of religion doesn't mean a life outside of principle, the principles are just based on a different ideology. The poetry itself is okay, but I agree with Marie Harrison in that it seems a bit confrontational and self-righteous, which can detract from your message (assuming you want the message to have impact as much as the words/rhyme).

A poem which not only strikes your heart when you read it, but tells such truth it really makes you think about it afterwards. If only we were more than we are...

.
. beautifully written ... no doubt about that ... you have an amazing gift for poetry ... personally, however, i don't think the issue is secularism ... secularism as i understand it ... which is respect for all religions as defined in the Constitution of India ... is not at the heart of superficiality or materialism ... fakeness and greed are natural instincts ... found in even those humans who don't believe in any religion ... only compassion for other humans can prevent us from being insensitive ... and compassion is about humanitarianism ... nevertheless, a great write ...
