This poem is one I wrote for English to oppose the negativity projected in Larkin, Plath and other poets works.

Poetry

 

They say the best poems in life are sad,

They depress to impress and are quite mad.

For Larkin and Plath this seemed true,

They wrote their poems in spite of you.

 

I on the other hand see fit to show,

The things that keep my heart aglow.

From the friendships and love I hold so dear,

To the sights and sounds of things near.

 

Life has not yet made me bitter,

I do not class myself as "tussocky litter".

Why be upset? Life is so much better,

with a smile as you read each poetic letter.

 

To those who write about the worst

I ask, why so glum?

Are the depressing feelings in you about to burst,

Or have the woes of life made you dumb?

 

Life is beautiful yet you poets make it die,

Talking of your troubles and making them last.

I'm always left here to wonder why,

You don't make the most of it and have a blast.

ignore any grammatical errors, this was written on the 9th of August 2013 in a response to the poets I am currently looking at in A level English. Feel free to tell me what you think.

What's better than reading a poem about poetry ! The best poems don't necessarily have to be the sad ones.
I do as a poet but believe that sorrow can be often captured more beautifully as hapiness . it fades , sorrow leaves a mark .i love this light peace here :) hope you are well , keep safe.

As I've grown up a lot from initially writing this poem (I think I was 16-17 when I wrote it down) I have come to understand a bittersweet beauty in sadness and come to respect poetry that reflects this in a different light. I still stand by my want, for the most part, to express feelings of joy and comfort in poems because sometimes the world needs a little touch of light in the dark. However I do understand life is never all sunshine and rainbows as life has shown me in a number of devastating ways in general.
