You, Me & The Third Degree Burns

You, Me & The Third Degree Burns

A Poem by Lola Nation
"

games of chance, lectures - never go well

"

Speaking from the one who knows better
and the one who never learns -
You
me
and the third degree
burns

If I tell you a secret
Will you promise to keep it?

If I promise a dirty confession
Will you be smiling then?
Hoping you taught me a lesson
taking me down from a high
that was not yours
was not mine

Perversion’s progression
starts with the mind
slithers in
tickling and tantalizing
the skin

ooh baby do and oh baby don’ts

kissing, licking with closed
eyes and doors
will she or won’t she
keep asking
for more

Compulsion is hunger
and you were starving
long before you ever met me

There’s nothing enticing
about obsession
You’re holding your money out
ready to bet, watching words spin round
the wheels of your turbulent mind
who’s lucky number is it? Yours, or was it mine?

I thought I told you
I don’t play the field
I like to break
even

I’m sure that I’ve mentioned
as Queens were concerned
It was only in a deck of cards.

Luck be a Lady tonight
(we’re not sure she was to begin with)
but among the b*****s
I’m pretty sure
you prefer
my pet
Agree?

I think this poem is pitch perfect in its rapid fire, free basing delivery. The tug of war and love here is freshly depicted with some deceptively simple phrases, "you and me and third degree burns" being the most descriptive and thought provoking.

This write brought to mind something an ex-lover of mine said to me. "Don't make promises in bed, the reality of keeping it can't compete with the fantasy of living up to it." Were were in bed when she said that. I rolled over on top of her and said, "Okay, I promise."
