When I Was Younger...

A poem for 90's kids.

When I was younger,

I wanted to run through the Hidden Temple,

And hang with the kids from All That.

I spent way too much time wondering why,

Nickelodeon combined a dog and a cat.

Jon-Benet and O.J. were hidden from me,

By my mother with great care.

When the news came on the channel would change,

And we’d watch the newest episode of Double Dare.

Harry Potter books flew off the shelves and Voldemort kids learned to hate.

Man, I miss being eight!

 

When I was younger,

*NSYNC, Britney Spears, and Eminem were all the rage.

Twelve was the perfect age.

 

When I was younger,

I watched with horror as the World Trade Center fell.

For a while it felt as though the whole world had descended into hell.

 

When I was younger,

My mother died.

I was fifteen,

Happy memories were few and far in-between.

 

When I was younger,

To the wrong man I almost got married.

He was troubled and I was crazy.

That marriage would have been beyond scary.

 

The older I get and the more memories I make,

The more I start talking about the past for old times’ sake.

Now I know that I will always say with a longing hunger,

When I was younger.

Ah, how I love the 90’s. Nickelodeon was THE channel to watch. And there were actually such a thing as Saturday morning cartoons. It’s no accident we see a resurgence of stuff that we loved in the 90’s. Companies are catering to those who want to recapture a bit of their childhood.

This piece was a nice trip down memory lane.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the poem. And yes, I obviously love the 90's too. lol The Nickelodeon that I watch today with my kids just doesn't compare to what it was when we were kids.
