A Pretty Rose

A Pretty Rose

A Poem by Lathen Griffiths

We are shivering flowers,
dithering in the breeze,
endlessly blown by the wind with ease,
with roots that learn to grow through stone;
deep and strong and hard as bone
and thorns that lie tucked out of sight;
behind each leaf and petal bright;

So pity those who come to pluck,
a piece of us their blood they’ll suck,
from each pricked finger to staunch the flow,
removing thorns before they go,
as barbs and briers tear at their clothes,
they’ll yell out…
“Ouch! Such a pretty rose!”

I have returned to this piece, I often re read poems that I particularly like. I have found myself thinking about other beautiful things in the natural world which can have a 'sting'. I have a peace lily. Lovely to look at, but I avoid touching it because it irritates the skin. Can cause a nasty rash. And then there are jellyfish. Again beautiful to look at but beware of venturing too close. I am enjoying your poetry Lathe.

Nature is truly amazing, how it evolves to entice one species to its own advantage, whilst deterring.. read more

Beautiful poem. Roses are my favourite flowers and I like to make this kind of analogies too. Roses, so special and delicate flowers, but not easy to get without enduring some pain, so whoever wants one, has to love it enough to want to get it.

Every rose has it's thorns. Perhaps they deserve to bleed. I loved this write.

You are very welcome.
And let that be a lesson to the bullies! Just joking. Beautiful observations on surviving life. The rose can teach us much. Well written, Sir.

Thank you.
Sometimes I think people are like
scared little animals, only more
selfish. On one of the smaller planets
on the fourth rung of this milky-way obove a great black hole.

We are all in this together.

Thank you so much Kescha.
such a beautiful flower that surely stands the test of time and learns to grow no matter what... one with nature...even a Rose needs to protect itself. Darn thorns!

Thank you Susan.
I admit that I am a sinner picking up roses, but truthfully I always try to do it gently. I like your poem because it showed both sides, the loveliness and strength of it, many people mistake flowers for being only weak, which is not true. look deep and You will see their strength. their irresistible allure is power itself. thank You for the sweet poem my friend and for the word "dithering" I think I will need it somewhere in my pieces :>
