Amidst The Winter Light

Amidst The Winter Light

A Poem by Lathen Griffiths
"

A cold winters day.

"
The light sings at its most melodious on cold winter mornings.

White frozen shards turn to mist
where the sun croons,
as brave little birds
tweet and chirp in harmony
to keep the cold at bay.

Dulcet tones of warmth
play major scales on the crisp soprano air,
whilst icicles, melt amidst the winter light,
returning to water,
rhythmically almost metronically;

drip, drip, drop, splash,
drip, drip, drop, splash.

Shadows beneath poplar trees
revolve, inch by inch like sundials
until eventually the morning is gone,
pulled like a rug from beneath the feet of December.

Winter sure numbs the skin and tires the soul. Luckily in these parts of the west coast we almost never endure such harshness. It would be nice though to see a bit of snow in this particular area. The last time any snow fell here was in the mid 1970's. Thank you Lathen for sharing this delightful piece of poetry with us and giving me a sense of what a real winter is like.

I quite enjoyed this poem. The imagery is by far excellent. I experienced it as if I were out there in the snow watching the bright sunny skies. It reminded me of the many times I have done the same, and how that experience remains comforting even now. Excellent work.

I love how the songs and singers of each season change. I could both see and hear.

Hello Lathe. Your posted image depicts a cold winter, blue sky morning perfectly. You take the reader on that walk with you. There are some admirable lines here and I enjoyed your choice of wording. The detail in this write tells me that effort has been put into the composition. The ending rounds it up. Cold hands, warm heart. Whose heart could not be warmed by such beauty.

Many thanks Chris, we’ve had quite a cold snap here in Wales, but such beautiful days, I think all.. read more
I see here a painting lived in, a scene from a novel... I don't know the difference between poetry and prose but I think this is more like a prose? letting the words take You wherever they are welling too. I understand your warm feeling inside Winter, I feel that too at times, it's the warmth of the heart and souls not the body. in the coldness of Winter it can ignites it more inside us.

P.S, sorry I lost it there but I couldn't help it. don't let anyone disrespect You, if they want to offer helping suggestions there is two words, Kindness and Respect.

Thank you Lightsong for your kind words.
the images in this poem warm the heart, regardless of the hands and toes numb with cold.
A beautiful scene is like stoking the flames in a hearth.

a lovely, descriptive write...
part of me was blowing on my fingers as I read it....the other part of me...was feeling like I was in a warm sun.

Beautiful images. But to be honest with you, I prefer a trail in the summer lined with shade trees. A well written poem nonetheless. Thank you for sharing.

Always a pleasure to read your work, my friend.
I like the amount of details in this poem. Wonderfully penned. One could almost feel the cold.
