A Poem For Days When I Don't Want To Get Out Of Bed

A Poem For Days When I Don't Want To Get Out Of Bed

A Poem by Laura Harrison

Some days, I wake up in the morning

And something

Perhaps the torrential downpour outside my window

Or even the hurricane inside my mind

Makes me want to stay in bed.

Sometimes, the world feels like a dart board

And I am the target

It seems like everyone on this planet is throwing sharp objects at me

Then picking them up only to take aim again.

Most of the time, I feel like I don’t belong here

My own country feels foreign to me.

But my bed is my sanctuary;

Nobody can harm me there

Nothing can make me fall down.

But I need to remind myself of the temporariness of a day

Just 24 hours and it will be over

And tomorrow could be the day everything changes

The day that I see the world in a new light.

I have to tell myself to be optimistic

Because my bed may keep me safe from the rest of the world

But it doesn’t keep me safe from myself

And when I am alone

My mind works in overdrive

Running through thoughts filled with sadness and suicide.

I need a distraction from these thoughts in my head

So I throw back the covers and get out of bed.

wonderful how what you feel poured on a piece of paper can relate to so many.
"i need a distraction from these thoughts in my head,
So I throw back the covers and get out of bed." this inspires the spirit of fighting the depressed side of ourselves and struggle for a better day, nice write!

an interesting insight into the world of a depressive......:) I also have days like these. and like you, know the best answer is simply to get out of bed and start something....:)

Thanks for sharing this deep insight into the very common human condition.....

Better to rise and see if the day can enchant those thoughts of melancholy and lacklustre...not easy, sometimes but if we can then the world can be explored, even if its in our head...lovely flow here x

'And when I am alone

Those are by far the best lines in this poem, it couldn't be more true.

The hurricane in my mind has the same effect...beds can be our safe havens or trouble, you've written it aptly. Well done.
