On the Outside Looking in

On the Outside Looking in

A Poem by Laura Harrison

People always ask me

“how are you so wise for someone so young?

And the truth is

I grew up on the outside looking in,

I watched how other people live their lives

which helped me to understand the world better

and, in retrospect,

taught me how not to live mine.

I have figured out

that you get to know the difference

between right and wrong

good and evil

by looking, rather than doing

because you get to see the consequences

that each wrong decision brings.

I have learnt that people

really aren’t as different as you think;

we all share the same manners,

thoughts and feelings.

And I have realised that the world

is not as perfect

as some people pretend it is

but I have also noticed

that there are others who have seen

and are hoping we can change this

because, like me, they too

have stopped every so often

to take a look at the world

and realise what is happening.

They too have noticed the hatred,

the wars, the corruption,

the segregation and the destruction.

They too have come to the conclusion

that this is not how the world should be.

We shouldn’t be turning a blind eye

to the horrors of the world

but rather,

helping others in their time of need

and realising that we should all be united.
