We Can't Hold On To People Forever

We Can't Hold On To People Forever

A Poem by Laura Harrison

In life
people come and then they go
and sometimes all we can do
is hold open the door
and let them walk through
because we can't hold onto people
who no longer want to be held
we can't fix something
that doesn't need to be repaired
and sometimes in life
we're the ones to leave
sometimes the person we want
is no longer the person we need
the world keeps spinning
and our lives carry on
without that someone
who was in it for so long
it's true that we can't rely on others
to make us happy
because we're the only person
who matters in our story
in life, people come and then they go
but regardless of that
we're never alone.

We're always alone, and we deal with much of our inner turmoil alone. You'll learn that in life just like I did when I thought I had friends and ended up getting fooled. If the person you want isn't the person you need, then you don't need to need anyone. I need no one on an emotional level, and I intend to keep it that way. Why hold on to anyone? Everyone's just going to use you. Or leave. Or die. There's absolutely no point in engagin emotionally with anyone. I keep my distance, and everyone else should too.

It's a good poem. You''re right. People do come and go, which makes forming bonds with them worthless.
