Insomnia

Insomnia

A Poem by Lawrence Parlier

Dry eyes spy the edge of sleep.
A stirring bliss slowly unfolding
to temporary oblivion.

It is always difficult to accurately and helpfully review shorter works, but there is definitely something to be had here. I personally felt that the poem was more about the act of falling asleep and not the inability to do so. The sensation of dry eyes is dreadfully emotive as it is largely applicable to everyday life and so estranged from other senses. I mean that with the idea of feeling one's eyeballs roll around in one's head like balls of glass. It makes us feel less human. I would also like to comment on the thoughtfulness of your including the word "temporary" as a definite means to exploiting the false salvation in sleep. Perhaps that is the insomnia, saying that one should not sleep as it is only temporary. Which then begs the question: "Well, what does one do? Die, live for experience?"

From someone who suffers from many a sleepless night, I know what it feels like to be on the edge, but not be able to fall....
and when I do actually fall asleep it is rather unlikely I will stay that way for long.
