This is Living

This is Living

A Poem by Lexi Askew

Isn't it wonderful?
Surreal even?
To be alive and to feel all that we feel?
Oh, it's so beautiful,
This feeling of living.
You get to experience
Such small wonders,
Such mundane feats of magic.

Being kissed?
I'll beg for it.
The burn of liquor on my lips?
Again!
A favourite song played on repeat?
Please.

The smell of shampoo.
Tears dripping from my chin.
An embrace from a lover.
A friend.
Goosebumps.
Pain.
Smiles.
Trees shaking in the wind.
A bee buzzing past your ear.

You're alive
And you can feel,
How perfect is that?
Take a moment
To really think about your existence
And how lucky you are to feel.
Death and decay
Have reached new heights,
It's necessary to breathe.

You could be dying,
You could be ash,
You could be down below,
You could be
You could be
You could be

But you're not.

You're here.
And you're alive.
Take a moment
And take a breath.

Everything is beautiful
When you never thought you'd make it this far,
Everything is magical
After year of thinking you'd be gone by now.

oh my ... heartbreaking and breathtaking at the same time says i! the journey can seem so overwhelmingly dark at times but an attitude of gratitude .. and childlike wonder is a balm no darkness can touch .. there is magic in every step we take .. a wonderment of grass and root ... confessional poems can be tricky .. this one wins me heart ... so glad we are all still here my friend!

Lexi - I think this is beautiful on so many levels. Sadly too many people disregard the myriad of simple things that make our lives so worth living. There are many things we all take for granted and you make a pointed reminder to us, that we shouldn't. Thank you.

Take care - Dave
