This story is an old story that I wrote when I was nine, I hope you all like it!

Prologue

“Mariana? You wanna know something?” I heard Brian say as he caught up with me. I laughed a little

“Not really! But I have a feeling you’re going to tell me anyway!” I said looking up at my tall friend. In fact, he was the only friend I had unless you counted the girl in shop who had at least been nice enough to warn me ahead of time that Lisa parkers was on the rampage against me again

“This blows!” he said rather loudly a few heads turned our way as we walked toward the double doors leading to the stairwell, he raked some of his jet black hair back from his forehead.

“Which part? That Lisa thinks you’re her man? Or the part where her brother and his pals their going to jump me after school like last time?” as I said this he looked down at me sharply and I actually cringed a little.

“What?! Are you kidding?!” he looked around the hall as if Lisa and her posse would show up any minute and start beating the crap out of me. I winced a little, having thought that was what he was talking about.

“I was way off of what you were talking about wasn’t I?” I asked him and he looked down at me about to say something but what we heard next elicited two completely different reactions from both of us. Brian looked up sharply his gaze angled in front of us, and I just groaned

Chapter one

“Hey! Clearwater! Come here a second we gotta talk to ya” the voice belonged to none other than Simon parkers, captain of the football team and major meat head. I looked over at Simon and saw he had all of the jocks by him and was surprised to see a few alumni lacrosse players that I didn’t recognize there too, I wasn’t surprised however to find Lisa Parkers standing there glaring at me, Brian leaned down and pretended to be tying his shoe

“What should we do? You know he’s not going to ask for your help with his math homework!” he said sounding serious, I knew from experience what would happen if I went over there alone. Same thing that happened last time I had an issue with Lisa. They would form a circle around us and let Lisa try to beat the crap out of me and every time I would try to hit her back one of them would grab my arm or whatever and stop me. At least until Brian finally got through their circle and got me out like he did last time, although the last time they pulled that stunt we were behind a Wal-Mart and Simon had, had his buddies bring me there instead of asking me to go to them. That’s actually how me and Brian met, he found me unconscious behind the store, he had ridden with me to the hospital and while I was waiting for my dad to come get me, we started talking and realized we went to the same school but that’s also the day my parents went missing. Simon was still standing there with his arms crossed trying to look intimidating, I chuckled a little and looked down at Brian ‘tying’ his shoe.

“I know that Brian, I’m not stupid!” I whispered to him pretending to help him keep his balance him he gave me a sideways glance.

“Okay so what are we going to do?! I’m sure as hell not going to let you go over there!” he said his voice serious, I didn’t know whether to be grateful for his wanting to protect me or aggravated by the fact that he thought I couldn’t handle this by myself, Simon uncrossed his arms and spoke up

“What’s stoppin ya Clearwaters? Ya ain’t scared are ya?” I looked up at Simon and saw the smirk plastered over his face. I glared and went to move around Brian but he stood, grabbed my arm and shook his head a little, it took every ounce of patience I had not to laugh, because one of my dad’s favorite phrases went through my head.

“Fool me once shame on you, Try to fool me twice and you’ll pay the price.”

“cool it, he’s just trying to piss you off enough to go over there” he said lowering himself to whisper then turned me around giving me a gentle shove to keep me moving, the clicking of heels followed us down the hallway.

“You’re taking her side?!” Lisa shrilled sounding angry and surprised. Brian chuckled, calling back to the shrill blonde, I looked up at Brian trying not to laugh.

“Get a life Lisa!” as he said this the bell rang and everyone had already gone to their buses, so naturally that’s when Simons friends cut us off. Brian stopped laughing all of sudden after he’d gotten a good look at the faces of the people I had thought were alumni lacrosse players but I now saw were way too tall to even be in college, in fact he’d stopped all together his hand wrapping around my wrist, and holding me in place firmly.

“Do you really want to do this at school?” Brian’s voice seemed to change it seemed to have gotten deeper in a matter of seconds, Simon chuckled, and one of the ‘alumni’ stepped out from behind the others, I winced when Brian’s hand turned into a vise.

“Guess who figured it out! Do you remember me Allissandra?” the guy started towards Brian and me. I looked up at him, confused.

“Who do you think you’re talking too? My names Mariana not Allissandra!” I said the guy looked me up and down and he smiled. I shuddered a little, Brian’s grip tightened further and I wrenched my wrist away from him

“How…quaint!” he said and he reached his hand toward me he touched my bright red hair, as he did the hair on the back of my neck rose, Brian put himself between the man and me and grabbed my wrist again.

“When I say run, run” Brian’s voice still had that unfamiliar edge to it I started to get worried. The man spoke up again stepping closer to me sidling around Brian

“What?” I said confused I knew I wasn’t going to be able to get through the circle and Brian did too so I wasn’t sure why or where he wanted me to run but when he pushed me behind him more I saw why he’d told me to run. One of the men had a tranq gun in his hand which he was busily loading Brian saw me look at the man and nodded

“run!” he shouted he barreled past the man Brian still held my wrist practically dragging me behind him as we ran out the exit the sounds of shouts and footsteps pounded behind us as we bolted for the forest behind the school, I tried to keep up the best I could but keeping up is hard when the person is basically dragging you along over roots and fallen trees

“Brian you’d better have a damn good explanation for all this!” I shouted as Brian pulled me over yet another fallen tree. Brian looked down at me his face was red

“I’ll explain everything later okay?” he continued forward his hand still like a vise around my wrist.

“You know something?” I said, I ran ahead of Brian and stopped.

“What?” he said he looked impatient

“If I wanted my wrist purple I would have painted it myself!” I said I pointed to my wrist which had turned a light purple from the circulation being cut off. He let go after that and I rubbed my wrist. “Now I want answers! Who were those people? Why did they have a gun? And why are we running like criminals?” I said as I shot Brian a serious look. Brian never got to answer because just then something zoomed past my ear, thunking against the tree like a dart against a dart board. Brian tackled me as another tranq was shot at us, he pulled me up quickly and he shoved me in the direction of the cemetery

“Okay answers can wait!” I grabbed Brians wrist and ran with him.
