Safe Zone

Safe Zone

A Poem by Laura Kate

Hanging on to the edge

I’m on the verge of something

the line is ever so thin

I’m rocking

slowly but surely

brushing past the surface

of whatever awaits me on the other side

The closer I get to 90

the more I panic

some day

It will be too hard

to pull myself back

one day

it might become easier

to let myself fall.

Perhaps it would be better

in the long run

to stop trying so hard to pull myself back

It gets harder

and harder

but for now,

I’m gently rocking,

swaying,

in the safe zone

One of the reasons I was lucky to do many interesting adventures, such as riding my bicycle across the USA when I was 32 -- I wasn't afraid to die. Simple as that, one has to accept the possibility of death if one wants to enjoy the thrills of doing risky things in life. Some people hate that feeling of uncertainty & risk, so for them, I say -- stay away from the edge. Your poem sounds like it might be taken as having a fatalistic view of whether one lives or dies, but I find it a celebration of living as tho death could be knocking, so what? Nobody knows when the grim reaper will come, so why change one's approach to living, cowering in fear? I love a stimulating message like this! Stimulates thought & discussion! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Thank you for your kind review Margie. I enjoyed reading your interpretation. Best wishes, Laura
Some live their lives, others barely exist. Catching your breath is NOT always easy - nor painless ...but damn the alternative is just not acceptable to some of us.

I really like your interpretation of this one Chris. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
I can feel that gentle rocking, an action of comfort and soothing when we experience something unpleasant.
