Sanctum

Sanctum

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

Let me have my secrets...they bring me solace.

"

Like a burglar with a crowbar

you attempt to pry open

the door to the room where my secrets hide

a place where photographs are yellowed with time

yet still hold the rosy glow of youth

hopes are still tangible in this room

expectations still have the potential of being met

the gritty angst of life has magically stayed out

it is here I sing my song

the one I continue to write

but only when no one is watching

so please do not enter this sanctum of mine

it is my calm

                it is my serenity

and I will guard it with all I’m worth

Each one of us has our own inner sanctum. With time, we spend more and more time in that sanctum reflecting on who we were, who we are, and who we are to become. Being cognizant of time, makes us appreciate its fleeting nature; and we must all be guardful of how precious it is. This poem is a nicely penned tome to the inner self. Great job!

I love it. I think everyone needs an inner sanctum. "Like a burglar with a crow bar" has to be one of the lines I would least expect from you, yet you render it (the line and poem) beautifully.

Smiling here...always expect the unexpected from me.....LOL Thanks, Diana. Lydi**
This is so good Lydi, it does remind me of Anne Frank somehow though... but then the young "you" maybe Watching out of a window, in Old Amsterdam... it brings me many nostalgic visions, and brings me back, to the perfect feeling of the old times... very well done again!

I'm glad I could!!! :)
There's our public self, our private-life self... and then the personal inner self that only we know. "Sanctum" is a perfect description. I enjoyed this, Lydi. Makes me crave some solitude...

We all need it now and then, Rita. Thanks so much. Happy Thanksgiving! Lydi**
Me time! Precious moments of reminiscing, introspection or self-discovery - essential for growth but often neglected by everyday matters that are deceitfully urgent.

you are most welcome:)
I love your well penned words.
They brought to my mind the scripture: "Be STILL and know that I am God."
There is strength in stillness.
Happy Thanksgiving my friend.
