I Am Still Your Child

I Am Still Your Child

I am still your child

I cry when I realize I can’t call you

can’t ask you for advice

or make you proud

I am still your child

but now I am the only one

who remembers the smiling faces

in those black and white photos

I am still your child

your spark of consciousness

in this physical world

I am still your child

but you left me with this emptiness

and it grows with each passing year

Because

I am still your child

I had to read this becuz the title beckons hauntingly. You've expressed these oft-felt sentiments creatively with the sorrowful refrain that's oh-so-true in more ways than the parent-child sense. This refrain is fitting, even when one or both parents haven't lived up to their intended potential.

Three years on Lydia and this is still one of the most poignant poems I have ever read.

It is always a pleasure to scroll the back pages of the cafe, so much to unearth.

Man, i tear up pretty easily for a guy. I love my parents so much. They are my best friends and I would never swap them for anything in the world. Yeah I really loved this one. Memories are all you have left with you now. But I am sure your memories are something they have carried with them to their graves as well. Because I believe when someone dies all they carry to their grave are the memories they have created in their lives. ^^ Thank you for sharing ^^

Grief fades but never leaves us completely, especially when it is one so close to us. Beautiful poem, glad I caught it in the feed.

Yes, that is the great thing sometimes. :)
I bet a day doesn't go by when you don't think of them - thus is very touching Lydia :)

We are never old enough not to need our parents. Thank you for the kind review, River. Lydi**
'I am still your child.' Those few heartfelt words number among the most touching I have ever read.

i am sorry Lydia about your parents. I could feel your pain and loss in your touching words.

Of course, life is nothing without parent's love and affection. They mean the world to us.

Beautiful poem.

Every work of yours gives me a pain. And, i truly crave for such pain because it makes me more human. What a wonderful portrait have you made here. Parents are the most beautiful gift for any being. Nice poem.
