piquant

piquant

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by charmaine olivia

i inhale your memory like the salty sea air of morning

my mind’s eye jumps from engagingly stimulating moments

            to your provocative charm

                        to your savory appeal

you were an addiction

just like my smokes and drink

but now it’s too late to rewrite history

expletives roll off my tongue even as i remember your flavor

           i savor the memory

                        the zesty spice of you

a piquant ambrosia that seemed unattainable

                                    even unmanageable at first

then billowed like a sail on the day we said goodbye

I love the way you've used vivid imagery to suggest that the memory of this lover is a mixed bag of emotions & responses. I could picture & feel everything as your words drew a relatable picture. So many awesome word choices: "piquant ambrosia" . . . "unattainable, even unmanageable" . . . so true to life!

As I read you Lydia I start questioning myself at some point. "a piquant ambrosia that seemed unattainable" it seems like love for me. "piquant" this title suits the poem very much. Great work Lydia** :)

Dear Lydia,

I remember you, all these sweet writings, but you always manage a form of newness in every word you breathe.

Goodbye memories.. their ungracious, ghastly pain, written in the most heart.felt phrases. Oh Lydi, this is beautiful!.

For so many, your words make those memories, those scars, bearable.. Your words stroke the saddest of spirits, dear poet.. My tears still scald.. your poetry is near remedy

Wonderful colourful descriptors in this one Lydi. Such a feel of what memories are left when we have 'loved' and lost someone. If we truly 'loved' we cannot help but remember the details you portray even if we have acquiesced to our fate.

Not all good byes are pleasant. Some "Flavors" are just too hard to forget. Nicely stated. Valentine

Memories rise and fall in zests and crests. Across the landscape, the sea and the mind's eye it moves, sails and vibrates. It is all part of our engagement with life and beloved others.
This was beautiful and sad at the same time...:).................

"a piquant ambrosia" love that phrasing...

several people in my life fit into this poem with me.

can't rewrite history...but as poets we certainly do write about it in one or another, don't we?

Absolutely! Thanks so much, Jacob. Lydi**
This reeks - of bittersweetness Lydia. But those expletives turned by the fair poet's hand to finely penned eloquence.
Beautifully done.
