all that you left behind

all that you left behind

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by salvador dali

your eyes were a vault

keeping the best parts of me locked up

for safekeeping

you would gesture for me to come closer

and I would lean into you

certain you had secrets to share

seconds melted like ice cubes

in my tea

afternoons sailed into the past

on butterfly wings

sometimes i think i can close my eyes

and blink you back into being

wishing to curtsy and have you applaud

with your hearty laugh

truth is

all these years later

i still keep with me

all that you left behind

i miss you!

This is so heartfelt! The first 3 lines blew my socks off, it's such a subtle yet powerful way to say what you're saying. I love that this feels like a celebration of the remembered one, even with an intense feeling of missing him/her, it's not a pity party. Your word-crafting is top-notch as always! (((HUGS))) fondly, Margie

“Afternoons sailed into the past on butterfly wings.”- gorgeous image and line. Dali must have painted this just for you Lydi. I love your exquisite, tender, wistful poem as it sails on its romantic sea...so eloquent, so intimate, so graceful. Your reverie went straight to my heart. Memories of “all that you left behind”- I Sigh Deeply And Smile......:))

- These line are to me of much pain...They speak so poignantly of the helplessness of such a profound loss. You convey the pain so convincingly and so beautifully. I love the stunning imagery and the artwork.

Thank you, Drifter. Lydi**
I was captivated by your title and mesmerized throughout the entire poem. You have this ability to capture so many emotions when you write, especially when dealing with the past. I felt another big tug on the heart strings with this one. I know it came from a very personal space but I could relate so well to the message. Simply beautiful, Lydi.

ohhh this is so touching and such a wonderful sailor's maiden tale .. i love it all.... no stuble in reading ..very emotive and was especially drawn more in by:
"you would gesture for me to come closer
and I would lean into you"
i am refreshed that the turn was into a beautiful love that is delicately missed instead of some betrayal or ruinous wailing ... this is very relateable ... gentles the losses we all may have had..nice one Lydia!

Without any doubt whatsoever, this is a most beautiful and touching testimony of true and timeless love. And for what its worth, I would be less than honest if I denied still having the lump in my throat from when I first savoured these perfect words of yours Lydi. 10/10 in my book................Neville

'.... you would gesture for me to come closer ~ and I would lean into you~ certain .. '

Can one ever be certain except perhaps of and by your depths, Llydi. This is is carved in anything but a stoney heart .. and yet.. dear Lord, it's more than visible. Seems you can juggle pain, love and laughter with unknown but beautiful skill.. and leave me feeling more.
