back then

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork courtesy of saatshi art on pinterest

back then

i saw you

the unknown drew me in

the sun spilled out of my pockets

the sea air curled my hair

back then

we had eternity to fulfill our dreams

till infinity to write it all down

i smiled as i disappeared into a dream

you held my hand and followed

back then

i opened the dictionary

and found your photo

defining passion

or was it desire?

back then

we drank from the bottle of youth

you bent down to kiss me

as the grass on the dunes bent in the breeze

eternity flashed by

dystopia has replaced the dream

I find myself wishing we could wish our way to

back then

A beautiful, bitter-sweet poem, Lydia! Lyrical, and rich in imagery, you express the way many of us feel, looking back on our lives. So many killer lines here - "i smiled as i disappeared into a dream/you held my hand and followed" being right at the forefront for me! The final stanza says it all really - exquisite pain we would not have missed for the world! I am deeply moved by your words!

thank you for bringing this experience of drifting without fear nor hesitation ... if one but blinks .. the bus has gone by .. i love this poem .. rich in me own memories of youthful love and passions .. one .. there is one in particular who me Ma really liked ... i wonder and pray about her to this day ... such strong melancholy felt for me ... but what we thought love in our youth .. well .. mayhaps not run past first base ... love this read, Lydi .. it is simply inspired and inspirational says i!

True enough, E. Sometimes puppy love is meant to fail. Still, we always wonder, don't we? Thanks .. read more

Gee
I see the youth of today through envy tinged eyes even though I've had my turn.
Life flies past so quickly and it is only in later years that we slow and take in the wonder that is life and living.
So well written

You are so right, Gee. Youth is wasted on the young. Thanks for the review. Lydi**
Back then, it seemed so carefree, and they were so in love, or was it desire? How often do we wish to turn back the clocks to better days from the past, because our present is a dystopia, if we knew what would happen in the future, we would know not to make the same mistakes in the present/past, but unfortunately thats not how it works... for better? Or for worse? 50/50. Thank you for sharing, i enjoyed the read!

Back then is such a beautiful dream. Another time, another world. We thought it would never pass but it did as it always does. Time is cruel and change is its nature. I wish I could hold the past always. That I can't, makes me sad. Life just gets starker each day. You wrote this so beautifully. 💕

Somehow I knew you would identify with this one, Sharon. Thank you very much. Lydi***
we all have plenty of 'back thens' you have brought to light. the old 'when i was ... ' flow easier as time marches on. would i go back were a wish granted to me? HELL NO! there were more great times than not no need to change but ... i would have been more adventurous with both eyes open recognizing there were many more hills to see if the grass was indeed greener!
well written so very well written
