my train

my train

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by nicolas nomikos

it’s true you know

my train has left the station

that's why my image shocks me every time

i return my own gaze in the mirror

lost chances seem to wait around dark corners

taunting and teasing

reminding me of how much self-control I used

pushing fantasies and dreams away

did they even bloom

before they withered without warning?

truth has morphed through the years

and yet, the optimist in me thinks

if the train has left the station

It was going somewhere I was not meant to be

suddenly i really do believe

it’s true you know

In my old age I have truly become more self reflective. And at times am pained by the waste of potential. But I've come to understand regrets are a part of living. Especially when it comes to artistic creatives. There are many who never get recognized while living and develope notoriety after their death. A couple of my favorite writers that I admire gained somed prominence in this way. Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft having been recognized after their deaths in their 30s.

An interesting write, Lydia. I enjoyed the read. I think my bats have taken shelter in the belfry and my picnic is currently a few sandwiches short. But the devils are bound to fly at night and I can always forage for nuts. (laughing) On a technical note, in the second line of the final stanza you have typed "my" where I think you intended "me".

Indeed, indeed as the years pile up, perhaps physically all those things we took for granted, skipping, running, jumping and such activities taken for granted so much slowed nowadays to a more sedentary pace, still though, with advancement of time comes experience and an acceptance of life and just who we are and the end destination of that train journey, these days one takes on a much more considered and calmer aspect to life..
Hey driver! No need to hasten the speed, we'll get there, when we get there. relax and let's ruminate as we chug, chug along the way..

Such endearing musings my friend, and as with all your poetry, you're selected artwork always adding gravitas to the theme of each beautifully penned poem! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Dear Lydi,
Your words have a gentle sadness to them...looking back we reflect so much and regret quite a few things that could have happened differently.
We cannot control all parts of our journey fully and sometimes we are taken to places different from where we had planned and we feel a pain.
At other times, we behold our blessings and can't be thankful enough.
Life is a mixed bag of bitter and sweet, I think.
A poem that is personal yet very relatable to most and it was beautiful to read.

You're most welcome, dear friend.
Rod Serling's Twilight Zone was an amazing show despite what it put us through. The real twilight zone exists in our minds, not in reality. Wonderful poem. It was whimsical. :)
