My Own "Daddy"

My Own "Daddy"

A Poem by MLeigh
"

Gah, the very first poem I've literally ever written. This was an assignment for my AmLit class, and I decided to write under the influence of Plath and her style of confessional poetry. Be easy. D;

"
I woke when I was five to find you gone
without a blink, and scarcely a goodbye.
“We can start,” mother said, “with a new dawn.”
I tried to kill you, but you would not die.
Daddy, I tried my best to forget you.
A child’s heart turned to stone, burned with feigned hate,
trembled at your returning face. It’s true,
I can’t forget, despite this trick of Fate’s.
But with each look of pride, each word of love,
I felt the ice in me melt, the walls crash.
It’s losing you, not pride, I’m afraid of.
Would you leave again, reduce me to trash?
Don’t make me go through that again, Daddy.
Don’t be the worst thing to happen to me.
