A Story by Mackenzie Brooke

Dear Journal

May 8th 1864

It’s hotter then a roaring flame in Virginia today. We met the enemy in large field today an attacked for hours. I couldn’t bare to face anyway but forward because to the sides of me men, good, honest, religious, men falling at the mercy of the Yankee’s bullets.

My buddy Patrick and I sat together for a long time after the finished. Patrick has a wife and three kids in his home of South Carolina, a girl named Elizabeth, a boy named Gregory, and a nearly new born baby boy named Collin.

I told him about my Annabelle’s  crazy notion about knowing that our unborn baby is a girl. However apparently Patrick’s wife Martha predicted the sex of each and every of their one of their children and was right every time.

Sincerely,
Rory McFinnigan

This seems so real. It saddens me but I yearn to know whether this man will make it home or not.

This is a great premise and mechanism for a larger collection of work, perhaps a novel. Nicely penned.
