Chapter (3) MY BEST MATE

Chapter (3) MY BEST MATE

A Chapter by MAD ENGLISHMAN

                 MY BEST MATE ?

I got a welly stuck once in sticky ukky mud

We was playin by the river though we knew we never should.

I pulled and pulled then out it came, My foot and not the welly

The good foot slipped and down I went, to land upon my belly.

Cor, your mum is gonna kill you, my best school pal had said.

She'll probably be so angry she'll send you off to bed.

I had to get my welly back, from out of where it sank

My best mate said let's get a rope and tie you to the bank.

It sounded like a brilliant plan till I was fastened tight

Then went back just to find I'd pushed the other out of sight.

My best mate pulled me on the rope,  I fell back in sticky slime

Cor, he said, you've done it now  you're done for real this time.

So now I've got no wellies, I've got mud all over me

My best mate's laughing, he can't stand so leans against a tree.

My sock's come off,  the mud's knee deep I'm sinking by the minute

I need to find clean water and just dive right on in it.

Pull me out, I shouted, I'll wash off in the river

He got me out and dived in, it really made me shiver.

Cor, he said, now you're all wet, your mum'll have fit

I stood and dripped a minute, then found a place to sit.

By tea time I was nearly dry and had face mums' wrath

When all I really wanted was my supper and a bath.

I told my mum about the day, about my mates great plan

She scolded me, then kissed me, then imposed a playing ban.

Three days I had to stay in. My best mate never came round once.

This brings back memories, good ones, when me and my mates would play around the old gravel pits, (a banned place as far as grown up were concerned,) but we took no notice, and somehow, none of us came to danger.

Mud and best mates, a perfect combination.

A time of innocence and simplicity. Never heard of health and safety. We just enjoyed life.

A wonderful poetic story. The words flow well and the rhymes make it even better. The overall humour of the story is a nice added touch. Well done.

This one really did have me smiling all over my face and all over the place. I must also agree with my reviewing predecessor Ally The Cat this work of yours does have a deliciously Englishness about it.... N
