Maybe

Maybe

A Poem by Madeline Shay

Maybe

Maybe the raindrops that I saw were tears.

Maybe they fell from a great giant, fraught with grief.

Maybe angels are falling from the sky, but you can see right through them.

Maybe God filled up a glass with too much water and had to dump it out.

I guess the little girl doesn’t know that she is jumping in a puddle

Of tears and souls and wasted lives.

Maybe she jumps because she can.

Because the tears she cried earlier were only the result

Of the flame sputtering,

Though she is alive and happy now.

Maybe she jumps because there is no one there to see her.

Maybe if the old lady from across the street came outside,

She would be greeted with “Yes ma'm"s and “How do you do, ma’m?”s.

But there is no one there and the angels or the tears or the waste, or the whatever they are’s

Pour down on her small, vulnerable head.

Maybe she doesn’t care.

Maybe that’s ok.
