The Secret

The Secret

A Poem by Madhusudha

The Secret

I hold it close to my heart, my secret

Precious words, hidden thoughts

That belong to me and in me alone.

My delicious little secret, I hug to myself

wrapping my arms around my chest,

My lips pursed tight,

My eyes looking down.

Repressing my smile

I look around

Wondering why it felt

Like everyone knew, could suspect

I only wish I could hold this in

Till it would no longer have to be

Kept close, deep within me.

Mom peeks in, concern

showing, on her face.

Asking, “What is it, dear?

Are you feeling well?”

I nod, afraid, I might,

If I open my mouth,

Blurt out my secret.

Dad walks by, rustling my hair

Pausing midstride, he turns around.

Peering closely, at my poker face.

“Hey man, he says,” how’s it going?”

“Great, Dad, just great.”,

I say, and run away,

‘fore I say something more.

My brother bumps into me,

Nudging me hard with his elbow.

“Hey! I know, you are up to something!”

My eyes wide, I

 wonder, “Could he, really?”

Tauntingly, he watches, hoping

To tease me into confessing.

“No, he could not”, I say to myself.

I relax, sit back, hugging my shoulders

Knowing, it is still all mine,

To keep, to cherish

To share, to relish

And would remain

Until I decide, I reveal

My big, little, sweet, secret, secret!
