Wings Required

Wings Required

A Poem by Margeaux Souter

The ceiling felt so far away from her as she stared up from her bed

His feeling was the opposite, the ground and river felt close, they beckoned to him.

She turned the light on, effectively banishing the moon’s eerie creatures.

He felt like someone famous, the bridge railing under his feet felt like a stage, the moon above like a spotlight, and the stars around him like spectators, waiting to see what he would do.

She went to the window and looked down, he wasn’t there

He took one last look around, then he jumped

She dove onto the bed and sobbed into her pillow

He couldn’t fly after all
