Sirens

Sirens

A Poem by Jay
"

More like a story than poem"

"

The wailing sirens drowned out the dying breathe of a man shrouded in the color of midnight.

As he lay there gasping for air,

The light slowly leaves his eyes.

Eyes once bright and full of love and promise became dead and unforgiving

In a pool of his own blood flashes from a life no longer his concern flood his conscious mind

He tries to remember the final words he managed to say to those he loved the most

Content with the idea of telling them exactly how he felt,

Yet tormented by regret was his being

When faced with the fact that he'll never be able to utter a single word to them.

Gazing at the stars breathing slowly as blood filled his lungs

He drifted off into darkness free as his final thought.

Lingering on each word as they slipped through his fingers.

First went the loved ones whom he spent most of his days cherishing,

Then was the idea that he might make it out of such a hopeless situation.

Lastly he accepted the terms of the deal he made to reach this point

As he exhaled his final breathe he cursed the world and everyone in it.

Coughing and retching he bit off his own tongue

So that the world could have a taste of his pain.

Bitter and bloody it lay there

Lifeless and alone

Ashamed and unloved.

Taking pity on him he welcomed with open arms an old friend grey and lifeless

Her warm embrace came to relieve this aching soul of anymore suffering to be endured

As he lay dying.

Very moving, I still dont understand how you manage with such touching words in such a short but elegantly worded poems. The way in which this has been written,I actually feel that i am there with this man as the sirens wail in the bacground.

It really feels that you have gotten inside the mind of an unfortunate man at deaths door.

Truly remarkable how you write like this all the time. I am touched once again.

Mark.

This is such a moving piece, the phases of dying were captured so well. He loved those he cursed. The biting of the tongue made this piece. Even though he was already silenced, the action spoken for him. Them the figure of death he was once fearful of in the beginning ended up bringing him peace from his sorrow and madness in the end. Thank you for sharing. Always enjoy reading your work.
