Beware the Ides of March

Beware the Ides of March

A Poem by Melanie Jane Boicourt Shanks
"

Wrote for a contest requiring the use of the Ides of March and the warning there of.

"

Beware the Ides of March my friend

For that is when danger arrives

And as that day comes to an end

There may be a loss of lives.

It was spoken from a soothsayers tongue

Who knows?  It might be true.

I couldn't believe the words that were sung

But I feel the need to protect you.

You’ve been a long time friend to me.

I know we’ve had our ins and outs.

But as this warning you open and see

Please try to forget your doubts.

Beware the Ides of March my friend.

Please leave your house or lock your door.

I don’t want our friendship to find its end

And this might be an all out war.

The Ides of March, especially the 15th, stemmed from the fact that Julius Caesar was betrayed and assassinated on that day. The knives aren't out for this write however, it's protected by a shield of creativity and poetical astuteness - fascinating composition!

I thought this poem was well written, and it seemed to flow easily for the reader. It seemed like there could be a stronger sense of urgency however. I think I lost that sense when you explained that the warning was in the form of a letter ("But this warning as you open and see"). It might have a stronger impact if I felt the narrator was actually verbalizing the warning to his friend. Overall, it was a very good write. Thank you for sharing it with us on the Cafe.

did you mean to write 'please DON'T leave your house' etc...
a timely warning as the Ides are upon us! and a great poem with good flow and message.
i am not as devious as Julius so I am not too worried!
Thank you

I think I'm supposed to know some history on the Ids of March, which I don't, still I like the feel of this piece. Rain..

Another great idea for a contest - and an impressive response.
The ABAB scheme worked really well to create the pace and place emphasis on words; really did feel like a warning. I think you've done a great job of this.

Thanks for sharing it, and good luck in the contest.

Not really sure what you're trying to say here. I even read the others' reviews about it, just to understand what it was about. Seem like it's a quote from the prophits or something like that? On the other hand, wasn't March supposed to be some kind like lucks and the curses of the Irish? I don't know, I'm not Irish

Anyway, it's all good here and wish you and everyone else the best of the lucks...

Shakespeare!
Julius Caesar~ the elements and detail of treason gives the poem such intense turbulence!
just hanging on the edge of the seat waiting for the story to end!
i very much enjoyed this poem!
its good!

keep it up!

A warning a gut feeling, Trying to keep a lover or friend safe from the powers of fate and karma. I like how you brought the ides of March into this, but basicly kept the story about what you wanted there.
Wonderfull write! :)
