The black mist-like creature

The black mist-like creature

A Story by Melanie Jane Boicourt Shanks

True story

"

I have always been open to believing in ghosts. I remember as a child, I often thought I saw a glimpse of some here and there. Of course, that notion is quickly whipped out of you as you grow up and realize that you aren’t supposed to talk of such things. You aren’t supposed to talk about a lot of things that seem very real to you as a child.

I come from a very intuitive family and so I naturally had the ability to do and see some things that not all children could. Now, I know that it was normal for my family, but when I was younger, nobody talked of such things. For instance, I didn’t know that not all people could see the shadow-like lights that were around every living thing and a lot of nonliving things. I thought that everyone could see that. It wasn’t until later on in my childhood that I realized I was weird.

Not to mention the fact that I saw things before they happened. Scary!! That is not a gift-curse that I would wish on any child. I thought that I was evil (spawn of the devil himself). It was hard to distinguish if I saw things before they happened or if I created things in my mind to happen.

I remember one incident vividly. I was playing dodge ball in gym class in about 4th or 5th grade. I saw (I’ll call her Suzie) get hit right in the face with the ball. I saw it in my mind. I did not like “Suzie” very much. She was very mean to me. A lot of people were, but she was an instigator if you know what I mean. So when Suzie got hit in the face with the ball for real, I felt really weird (almost like I was guilty) and I didn’t throw the ball.

Well, I since have made peace with my gift-curse after a very long and bumpy road of self-doubt and partial insanity. The long road led me from a confusing darkness where I turned away from anything spiritual at all, to an enlightening, anything goes, free-for-all existence. Luckily, I found my way back down to reality. On that road, I have seen some interesting things.

The scariest thing that I ever saw as an adult was in an old duplex that I used to live in. My oldest son was six and my daughter was just a baby. It was about 10:30 in the morning and my husband was at work and my son was at school. I was on the couch napping off and on while my daughter napped in a playpen beside me. All of a sudden, I felt a bad energy come through the door. I saw a black mist-like creature on the ceiling and it saw me too. Now, I shouldn’t tell you this because if I do, you will blow this off as a dream, but here it goes….

I never really opened my eyes. I was on the couch but I was no longer on the couch. I had instantly risen up out of my body at full attention ready for battle. That was how evil this thing felt. It was not some ordinary ghost. I quickly closed my thoughts as to not give any hint of weakness. This all happened without me really understanding how. It just did. I sent a message to it that I was not scared of it, I was not scared of anything and it was to leave this house immediately. I again had to guard my thoughts so as to not reveal the only thing that I was truly scared of (my children getting hurt).

It flew across the room and down the hall. I followed it. Well, I was still on the couch but my awareness followed it all the way down the hall and it turned into my son’s room. It was then that I realized that I was not in my body. I think the guilt I felt for blowing off my sons complaint of the evil face that he always saw in his room brought me back. I quickly snapped back and then jumped off of the couch and ran into my son’s room. Of course I found nothing but an eerie feeling.

Now, I know that some of you reading this will just think that this was all a dream. It did not feel like a dream to me. I have had some very real dreams and visions don’t get me wrong. Never had I snapped back into my body before jumping up and running down a hall. That was down right scary. One thing that came from all this was that I didn’t give my son a hard time when he didn’t want to sleep in his room. I am much more open with my children about their abilities. I hope that more people will take their children serious after reading this.

I remember you now.

Just kidding.

Interesting piece. The apparition sounded pretty scary. I often get the impression that little children and animals see things we often don't (or refuse to). There is a reason our stories from the past are filled with ghosts and goblins and things in the night. Maybe they are real after all, but choose not to be seen. Good write.

Definitely makes you think. I have luckily never been able to see those things that are just beyond ordinary perceptions, but I don't doubt that there are people who can. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the rest of us. This sort of thing definitely makes you redefine certain terms in life. What's weird to one is perfectly normal to another.

Absolutely fascinating.....I like that you view these experiences in a good light and have learned to understand them. You should expand this story....I would definitely read more!

An interesting write. I use to be so fascinated with this sort of thing. I have done a lot of research into this and found apparitions to be nothing more than demon spirits. A Christian has authority over them and can tell them to leave in Jesus name. I would consider you and your family to have a prophetic gifting. I saw the same thing in my family going way back. Everyone of them, including myself use to see apparitions. Thanks for sharing, Mejasha!

This is a very eerie piece. I have always been fascinated by stories of the supernatural, things that are generally taken to be impossible but could, just maybe, be real. The idea you've presented with children seeing things we don't has inspired me tremendously, and I think I'll write a story concerning it. As for your own experience, I've never heard of someone really having that before. It's really freaky.

It's called an Astral Projection, or out of body experience, and no you're not crazy :) and yes children can often see things better than we can because they have not already trained their minds to ignore things they can't easily explain like us adults. It's kind of like a noise that is annoying and you don't want to hear so you keep trying to ignore it, eventually you realize you havn't heard it in a while, but the noise is still there, you just temporarily trained your brain to ignore it.

Excellent piece by the way! :D Throughly enjoyed it!

I'm not sure if you want editing suggestions, since this seems more like a journal than a story, but here goes! :)

2nd Paragraph - "Now today," two references to a time period. One can be removed and still keep the same meaning and also flow better.

5th Paragraph - "The long road led me from a confusing turn away from anything spiritual at all darkness to an enlightening anything goes carefree-for-all existence, and then luckily back down to reality." This sentence is rather confusing and could use some comma's and the phrase carefree-for-all should probably be either carefree or free-for-all but not both.

Well written-This event is only 'crazy' to those who are very frightened by the unknown. you know humans if they can't see it or feel it or touch it it can't exist-You must be crazy...yeah, riiight...
As you certainly know we are not alone. Astral projection was what you experienced (being outside your body and knowing it) You are truly blessed with the gifts of 'seeing' and of intuition-I too share this gift-curse- I often say; "If I could bottle my intuition and sell it I'd be rich"-And yes we are taught to ignore it,to not trust our own 'gut feelings'. I bought this teaching so well that I lost my spirit of discernment, leaving me without tools of protection against those of bad intent. To this day I still have to remind myself to believe in my intuition and speak up- when I don't it happens anyway and I'm left wishing I had believed.
My strongest gift-curse is empathy. I am an Empath. I 'read' a room or a person unconsciously. So while I 'feel' ghosts, I don't see them as this is not my gift. I can touch an object and get 'flashes' from that object-I don't mention that gift curse at all-'till now-
You are an old soul or you would not have known to protect your thoughts. I too learned (from humans) to think underground to protect myself from the energy stealer's; those with bad intent. Unfortunately my empathy gets in my way as I always have to do a reality check to see if these are 'my' feelings or someone else's-I have driven many a person to distraction because I know when something is wrong with them regardless of how much they protest that they are fine. The older I get, the quieter I have become..

I am including a piece I wrote a while back I hope you don't mind but I think you will understand.

Shades of Grey]

I am a halfbreed
man and ghostly being
Appearing alive
But traveling in the world of the dead

As thousands of unheard voices
scream Help Me
Filling my dreams
with horrifying and haunting scenes
Things I wish I had never seen

Is this a blessing or a curse
That is yet to be seen

This world is not black and white
I dwell in lonely shades of gray
That place between what is seen
and those things that creep

As I wonder why me
I lack what others call
Traditional faith
Believing in destiny and fate

But yet night after night
day after day
I am plagued
Seeing ghostly things

So you can call me a freak
Even a liar if you choose
but this is my cross to bear
I wouldn't wish this on any of you

I figure that to live with such an - let's call it 'ability' isn't easy at all, but that one learns to do with it.

I'm touched by your courage.

The way you told this, your story could really be worth a movie. Your writing is very good, moving and nicely scary!

Yeah, I've never made my children sleep in their rooms when they were affraid. We've (me and my children) all seen and felt things that shouldn't have been seen and felt, in the house I just moved out of. We've had some pretty strange happenings in our lives. I find it funny how others believe in good spirits but not the evil. If there's a Holy spirit, then what do they think is causing such chaotic events around us.

Great story!

Wow! That is seriously freaky. I dont' doubt that it all really happened. As children we can all sense things adults can't, but the fact that you can and are still in touch with that is amazing!
great read!
