A Spoon of Salt

Before you read: This poem is about the general "A student" that most of us know shouldn't be in that position. The Sarah Palin of school.

A spoon of salt on that cut

To make the point come across

That you’re prone to pain

Just like the rest of us.

 

Oh how fancy you must be

A scholar in college

Life must be a breeze

Head of broken knowledge.

 

The only thing you’re good for

Is being a showy tool

A Know-It-All from hell

Misconception’s fool.

 

Don’t get education

Mixed with intelligence

Weak can be accepted

While strong is on the bench.

 

Opinions taken from

Common read novels

Used to breed the minds

Of illiterates baffled.

 

In the end is always a loss for defeat

So don’t try and hide, you’re a brain-deadbeat.

 

You can always redeem yourself

A screw that’s come unwind

From Paris Hilton’s mindset

To a proud One-Of-A-Kind.

Author's Note

I had in mind the type of people who base most of their opinions off of novels and "Literature" they read in school (Because God knows they don't read outside of school) such as popular books like Walden, a Brave New World, Emerson, etc. Although, I do like Emerson and Thoreau, many people in my age group (18-24) who rely on school alone to teach them everything in life (Slaves to government) really base most of their opinions from idealistic teachings like this. Not in the way they were intended for either, but in the use of rebellion and hatred. My opinion on this whole subject is: If you're going to learn something, base an opinion off of it and act with it, do it in good regards.

That's all it is. If more people chose to have a good mindset WITH their opinion, rather than hating a certain group of people (I shouldn't have to name any specific groups), then all these protests and rights wouldn't be held in so much vain.

You need to know, I did not read the author's note, nor will I (sorry, it's really long and boring) so...I am just speaking about the poem and the writing...okay? The first stanza is...really good. I mean...really f*****g good. Not for nothing, though, not everyone who has a college education is a dick in the head...I'm just saying ;-) I really love what you are saying, which is what I say all the time...book smarts don't equal street smarts...i.e. I know what the f**k I am talking about because I live it...you???

Oh yeah, I know what you mean. I think I'm one of the people who has more of a book knowledge than actual experience, and I'm also in college xD

My main argument was supposed to be against the people who SOMEHOW make really good grades, but they're no smarter than the person beside them failing the class. And so on so forth.

Books don't teach you everything. Some things must be learned through experience; mistakes have to be made. I always hated the people that would mock those of us that didn't make straight A's *cough* and yet also couldn't replace the batteries in their remote.... okay, I think I'm ranting at this point lol

This is a great piece...from a personal standpoint I did six years of university and there were a lot of people who believed they were entitled to a degree simply because they paid for it...I can understand that to an extent given the absurd cost of school but still, it's only fair that you do the work and earn the thing, and I know a lot of people that did little to no work and still graduated...and even if you've "earned" it you're still not guaranteed any kind of professional reward, and I can attest to that cuz I have nothing but a debt to show for something I was pretty proud of at the time...post-secondary schools aren't much different from businesses after all; they strive to make profits which they use to measure their prestige against other schools...I know this doesn't really line up with your premise but the poem certainly speaks to my now-firm belief that degrees are overrated unless you're a super-scholar which most people (including myself) are not :P Nice work :)

(I never got into Emerson much but he had a great line: "I hate quotations; tell me what you know" That's always been one of my favourite, umm, quotes lol)

Wow, that was a very amazing review! I know exactly what you mean. I really tried to convey the point and expose those type of people who's knowledge extent stops with school. That's what I believe ruins so many people and why there are so many dumb people in schools these days.

Back then, people always had to EARN their education, and if they could afford it, they'd put it to good use and increase their intellect. Nowadays people are like -Facebooking- "Doing my essaaaayyyy for the Civil War, Hitler is such a d****e! Anyway, gonna go make some cookies :DDDDD"

^^^ That's how most college people are now -_- It bothers me how limited they become. They'll study the f**k out of something or blow a few dicks for a good grade, but when it comes to actual knowledge, they're no better than Paris Hilton. That's really what I was striving for.
